How this practice set is weighted#

The practice allocation below is not an official task-by-task BACB blueprint; the official source gives Domain A as 13 scored questions, or 17% of the scored exam.

TaskOfficial task focusQuestions here
A.1Continuous measurement procedures3
A.2Discontinuous measurement procedures3

If the task names feel close together, review the rbt data collection and graphing study guide before checking the answer key. The guide keeps continuous measures, interval samples, permanent products, graphing, calculation, and reliability in one Domain A map.

Domain A practice questions#

Answer each group before reading the rationales. Every item is original study material written from the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), not from recalled exam content.

Questions 1-5#

1. During art, Lina places a bead in a cup each time Sam asks for a break during a 10-minute activity. Which measure fits the sheet?

A Correct. Task A.1 includes recording each occurrence when the plan calls for a response count.
B Timing the whole activity would not count each request made during the activity.
C Checking only at timer beeps is a sampling method, not a count of every request.
D Reviewing completed products fits durable work output, not live requests.

2. During reading, Omar leaves his chair and returns after different amounts of time. The sheet asks how long each episode lasts. Which measure fits?

A Counting each exit would give frequency, not the length of each episode.
B Correct. Task A.1 includes duration when the sheet asks how long behavior lasts.
C Interval scores sample occurrence and do not measure each episode from start to end.
D Inspecting work afterward would not time out-of-chair episodes while they occur.

3. Maya gives the instruction "touch the card." Jonah touches the card five seconds later. Which measure fits?

A Counting would report the number of touches, not the time after the instruction.
B Duration measures how long a response continues after it begins.
C Correct. Task A.1 includes latency, measured from the instruction to the start of the response.
D End-of-interval scoring samples a moment instead of the start after the instruction.

4. At centers, Jamal hums once near the middle of a 30-second block. The sheet says yes when the response happens at least once. How should the block be marked?

A Requiring the response throughout the block would apply a different interval rule.
B Checking only at the beep would apply a momentary sampling rule.
C Counting every hum changes the sample into a frequency count.
D Correct. Task A.2 includes scoring the interval yes when the written rule says one occurrence is enough.

5. During a 20-second block, Nora keeps her hands folded for 18 seconds and then reaches away. The sheet says yes only when the response lasts the whole block. How should it be scored?

A Correct. Task A.2 includes following the full-block rule, and 18 seconds is not the whole block.
B Scoring yes for most of the time changes the stated rule.
C Counting separate times would be a response count, not the interval score requested.
D Checking only at the beep uses a different sampling method.

Questions 6-10#

6. At the end of each minute, Priya checks whether Leo is reading at that exact signal. Which rule matches the sheet?

A Scoring any occurrence would include behavior that happened earlier in the minute.
B Correct. Task A.2 includes sampling whether behavior occurs at the specified moment.
C Requiring the full block would score sustained behavior across the interval.
D Counting page turns would measure a separate response count.

7. After handwriting practice, Mei counts legible copied words from the finished page. Which recording method fits?

A Live interval sampling would require observing behavior during the session.
B Cue-to-response timing measures delay after an instruction.
C Correct. Task A.3 includes measuring a durable result after the response has occurred.
D Full-session duration measures elapsed time, not the finished work product.

8. A plan allows checking completed sorting cards after the learner leaves the table. What must be true for that method to work?

A Hearing each response is not required when the lasting product is the measure.
B If the behavior has no lasting result, this method would not fit.
C Timer samples are used for interval procedures, not product review.
D Correct. Task A.3 depends on a durable result that can be checked after behavior occurs.

9. Nia is entering session totals and sees the paper sheet lists 12 responses while yesterday's graph point shows 21. What should she do before adding today's point?

A Correct. Task A.4 includes accurate transfer from source records before graph updates.
B Smoothing a line would change the display rather than resolve the mismatch.
C Estimating a value would create an unsupported record.
D Skipping a session would not correct the existing graph issue.

10. A graph key says blue circles show prompted responses and black squares show independent responses. A new point uses the wrong symbol. What is the best correction?

A A correct value with the wrong symbol can still misrepresent the data path.
B Correct. Task A.4 includes updating graphs so the display matches the recorded data.
C Moving the point changes the session location instead of correcting the symbol.
D Averaging the paths would combine different response types.

Questions 11-15#

11. Which session note would let another observer identify the same response?

A "Upset" is an interpretation unless observable responses are described.
B "Attention-seeking" states a possible function rather than the observed response.
C Correct. Task A.5 includes observable and measurable descriptions, and this note states an action and count.
D "Avoided hard work" infers purpose without naming the measurable response.

12. The note needs an objective setting detail from recess. Which wording is most measurable?

A "Felt chaotic" is subjective and does not give a measurable setting event.
B "Too many" is a judgment unless the note states the count or event.
C "Stressful" interprets the situation rather than describing it.
D Correct. Task A.5 includes observable environmental descriptions, and the bell time is objective.

13. During a 15-minute timing, Elena records 9 independent labels. What rate per hour should the summary show?

A Correct. Task A.6 includes rate; 15 minutes is one quarter of an hour, so 9 multiplied by 4 equals 36 per hour.
B Twenty-four per hour would not follow from four equal 15-minute blocks.
C Fifteen per hour uses the minutes as if they were responses.
D Nine per hour reports the raw count without scaling to an hour.

14. Three tantrum episodes last 2, 4, and 6 minutes. What mean duration should the RBT report?

A Three minutes is below the average of the three episode lengths.
B Correct. Task A.6 includes mean duration; 2 plus 4 plus 6 equals 12, and 12 divided by 3 equals 4.
C Six minutes is the longest episode, not the mean.
D Twelve minutes is the total duration before dividing by the number of episodes.

15. A probe has 18 independent steps out of 24 total steps. What percentage is independent?

A Sixty-five percent is lower than 18 divided by 24.
B Seventy percent would equal 16.8 out of 24, not 18.
C Correct. Task A.6 includes percentage summaries; 18 divided by 24 equals 0.75.
D Eighty percent would equal 19.2 out of 24, not 18.

Questions 16-20#

16. Across four sessions, correct responses are 14, 12, 9, and 7. Which description stays closest to the display?

A A stable level would stay near the same value across sessions.
B A variable bounce would move up and down without a clear direction.
C A higher level each day would require the points to increase.
D Correct. Task A.7 includes identifying the visible pattern, and these points decrease across sessions.

17. A graph has points at 3, 12, 4, 11, and 5 with no steady direction. Which description is most objective?

A Correct. Task A.7 includes describing visible variability when points move up and down.
B A steady upward pattern would show a consistent increase.
C A flat level pattern would stay close to the same value.
D A graph alone does not prove that treatment caused the change.

18. After a phase-change line, data points move from around 2 per session to around 8 per session. Which statement is closest?

A The later points are higher, not lower, than the earlier points.
B Correct. Task A.7 includes identifying changes in level shown on a graph.
C A visible level shift appears when the points move from around 2 to around 8.
D The graph shows a pattern, but a single statement should not overclaim cause.

19. Two staff use different start and stop rules for the same out-of-seat episodes. What is the main problem?

A Adding reinforcers does not resolve inconsistent measurement rules.
B Graph colors do not address whether observers score the same response the same way.
C Correct. Task A.8 includes recognizing that unreliable collection can make scores inconsistent.
D Session length is not the problem described by different start and stop rules.

20. A teaching step is skipped, but the trial is still scored as independent. What concern should the team recognize?

A Faster entry does not fix a mismatch between implementation and scoring.
B More sampling time does not correct a skipped teaching step.
C Generalization is not shown by an inaccurate independent score.
D Correct. Task A.8 includes risks from poor procedural fidelity because the data may no longer represent what was actually implemented.

How to score yourself#

Use the table as a study signal, not as a BACB passing rule. The RBT Handbook states: The BACB uses the modified Angoff method to establish the RBT examination's passing score.

Result on this setReview action
18-20Recheck any missed rationale, then move to mixed practice.
15-17Review the two task codes with misses before retesting.
11-14Study measurement rules and calculations before adding time pressure.
10 or fewerRebuild examples from the Domain A guide before taking another quiz.

Candidates who also need application-process practice should keep those rules separate from Domain A content. For immediate review, use the RBT competency assessment 2026 guide; the planned rbt competency assessment practice test will be the matching quiz page when it is live.

Missed these? Study these tasks#

This table maps each miss to a first review move without pretending the page allocation is an official BACB task split.

Missed item numbersTaskFirst review move
1-3A.1Separate count, duration, latency, and response timing examples.
4-6A.2Re-score one interval grid using each written sampling rule.
7-8A.3Check whether the response leaves a durable product to inspect.
9-10A.4Compare source records, graph labels, symbols, and plotted sessions.
11-12A.5Rewrite labels and guesses as observable actions or setting events.
13-15A.6Show the denominator before calculating rate, mean, or percentage.
16-18A.7Describe direction, level, and variability without adding causes.
19-20A.8Ask whether collection rules or implementation errors weaken trust in the result.

The RBT documentation and reporting study guide is a useful next step when your misses involve records, notes, or timely supervisor communication rather than the measurement rule itself. The planned rbt practice test documentation and reporting will add a matching quiz set when it is live. For more mixed practice after review, open the app's quick RBT practice mode, which may require Google sign-in to save attempts and corrections, and treat the result as preparation, not as a guarantee.

FAQ

Is Domain A officially 20 questions on the RBT exam?

No. The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) lists Data Collection and Graphing as 13 scored questions, or 17% of the scored exam. This page uses 20 questions so each A.1-A.8 task gets repeated practice.

Does this page use real RBT exam questions?

No. The questions are original practice items written from the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) and BACB source documents. Real exam questions should not be copied, requested, or shared.

What score should I aim for on this data collection practice test?

Use your score as a study benchmark only. The RBT Handbook says the passing score is established with the modified Angoff method, and the BACB does not publish a fixed practice-test percentage.

What should I study first if I miss calculation items?

Start with A.6. Rework the numerator, denominator, unit, and conversion step for each missed rate, mean-duration, or percentage item before taking another timed set.

Should I study ethics after data collection?

Study ethics separately because Domain F has its own task list and RBT Ethics Code 2.0 rationales. For immediate review, use the RBT ethics and professional conduct study guide or sign in to save your attempts and corrections in the app's quick RBT practice mode. The planned rbt practice test ethics set will be the matching quiz page when it is live.
