The RBT competency assessment is the BACB-required skill demonstration completed after the 40-hour training and before the RBT certification application. Per the RBT Initial Competency Assessment Packet, the current form covers 19 task items and must be completed no more than 90 days before submitting an RBT certification application; use the official packet rather than a third-party fillable form.
What the assessment is#
The Initial Competency Assessment is a performance assessment, not a written competency exam or a practice test. Per the BACB Initial Competency Assessment Packet, the assessor gives the applicant an opportunity to perform each task and evaluates whether the task was performed in a competent manner.
The assessment sits inside the larger rbt certification sequence because the RBT Handbook separates training, initial competency assessment, application review, and examination authorization. Candidates who need the whole order should use the certification hub before scheduling dates.
Use the current BACB Initial Competency Assessment Packet, not an old PDF or unofficial form. The BACB transition guidance says the updated Initial Competency Assessment changed content and assessment options, and it says assistant assessors must hold RBT certification or higher.
Current task and method map#
The map below is the page's information-gain element: it combines the current packet's task list with the permitted assessment method, without copying assessment prompts.
| # | Packet section | Task focus | Permitted assessment method |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Measurement | Continuous measurement | Client or role-play |
| 2 | Measurement | Discontinuous measurement | Client or role-play |
| 3 | Measurement | Data entry and graph updates | Client or role-play |
| 4 | Assessment | Preference assessments | Client or role-play |
| 5 | Assessment | ABC data | Client or role-play |
| 6 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Discrete-trial teaching | Client or role-play |
| 7 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Naturalistic teaching | Client or role-play |
| 8 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Chaining | Client or role-play |
| 9 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Shaping | Client or role-play |
| 10 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Discrimination training | Client or role-play |
| 11 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Prompting and fading | Client or role-play |
| 12 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Token systems | Client or role-play |
| 13 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | Crisis or emergency procedures | Client, role-play, or interview |
| 14 | Skill acquisition and behavior reduction | One listed behavior-reduction procedure | Client or role-play |
| 15 | Professionalism and requirements | Objective session notes | Client, role-play, or interview |
| 16 | Professionalism and requirements | Client dignity examples | Interview |
| 17 | Professionalism and requirements | Professional-boundary examples | Interview |
| 18 | Professionalism and requirements | BACB supervision standards for RBTs | Interview |
| 19 | Professionalism and requirements | When to seek clinical direction | Interview |
The packet also says three tasks in the skill acquisition and behavior reduction section must be demonstrated with a client. The planned rbt competency assessment tasks page will be the better study page for one-by-one task preparation after publication; until then, use the official packet and the map above for task-method checks.
Timeline and requirements#
The timeline below shows the assessment's place in the initial certification process under the RBT Handbook, the 2026 training outline, and the Initial Competency Assessment Packet.
- Finish training first. The RBT Handbook and 2026 training outline require a 40-hour training completed in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days.
- Schedule the assessment. The packet says the assessment may be conducted over one or more sessions and may use in-person, live-internet, or recorded-video administration created for the assessment.
- Stay inside the application window. The packet says the assessment must be completed no more than 90 days before submitting an RBT certification application, and the RBT Handbook says Certification applications are active for 90 days.
- Upload the completed form. The RBT Handbook tells applicants to upload the completed current Initial Competency Assessment with the RBT certification application.
- Wait for exam authorization. The RBT Handbook places the Pearson VUE examination after application approval, so the assessment does not replace exam preparation.
Because the assessment depends on completed training, the rbt 40 hour training page is the right next step for readers who have not finished the required course. The training page explains the duration rule, trainer rule, and independent-provider statement before the assessment clock starts.
Requirements table#
The requirements table separates timing, format, assessor, organization, upload, and fee rules that often get mixed together.
| Requirement | Current rule | BACB source |
|---|---|---|
| Training before assessment | Complete the required 40-hour training first | RBT Handbook, Eligibility Requirements; 2026 Training Outline, Duration |
| Timing | The assessment must be completed no more than 90 days before submitting an RBT certification application | Initial Competency Assessment Packet, Timing |
| Format | in person, live via the internet, or through recorded video observations; each task is shown with a client, in role-play, or in a live interview as the packet specifies | Initial Competency Assessment Packet, Structure and Administration |
| Responsible assessor | A BCaBA or BCBA who completed the supervision training oversees and signs the assessment | Initial Competency Assessment Packet, Qualified Assessors |
| Assistant assessor | Assistant assessors must hold active RBT certification or higher and work under the responsible assessor's oversight | Initial Competency Assessment Packet; 2026 Transition Guidance |
| Organization rule | the responsible assessor, any assistant assessor(s) and the applicant must all be employed at, or have a contractual relationship with, the same organization | Initial Competency Assessment Packet, Relationship Expectations |
| Upload | The completed current assessment is uploaded with the RBT certification application | RBT Handbook, Applying to Become an RBT |
| BACB application fee | $65 certification application processing fee (paid to the BACB) | RBT Handbook, Fees |
The upload step connects directly to the planned rbt application process page because names, dates, signatures, attestation, and documents must match the BACB portal submission. Until that page is live, use the RBT Handbook's application steps and the BACB portal prompts after the assessment is complete.
Who this does not apply to#
The initial competency assessment applies to applicants, not to every active RBT renewal cycle. Current RBTs should not use the initial packet as a renewal checklist because the RBT Handbook and transition guidance distinguish initial certification from recertification.
Current RBTs who need renewal-specific rules should not use this initial form as their checklist. The planned rbt renewal competency assessment page will cover that separate process after publication; for now, compare the RBT Handbook and transition guidance because 2026 recertification and later 2-year PDU cycles use different requirements.
Applicants also should not assume a training provider carries BACB approval. The RBT Handbook says the BACB does not provide 40-hour training, certificates of completion, or training program recommendations.
Common mistakes#
The common mistakes table corrects outdated or incomplete claims against the current BACB documents.
| Mistake | Correct rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Treating the assessment as a written test | The packet uses client observation, role-play, or live interview, depending on the task | Flashcard-only preparation misses the performance format |
| Using an older checklist count | The current packet lists 19 task items and says all task items must be completed | Older checklists can include outdated labels or counts |
| Hiring an unrelated outside assessor | The packet requires the assessor, applicant, and client-serving organization relationship described in the responsible assessor, any assistant assessor(s) and the applicant must all be employed at, or have a contractual relationship with, the same organization | A completed form can still fail the relationship rule |
| Completing the assessment too early | The packet says the assessment must be completed no more than 90 days before submitting an RBT certification application | An otherwise competent assessment can become stale before application submission |
| Merging initial and renewal rules | The Handbook and transition guidance separate initial assessment, 2026 recertification assessment, and later PDU cycles | Initial applicants and active certificants have different paperwork |
Readers comparing assessor options should apply the packet's relationship rule before paying for assessment services. The planned who can do the RBT competency assessment page will cover responsible assessor, assistant assessor, employment, contract, and conflict rules after publication.
Date check and interview drills#
Use this date check before scheduling: training end date comes first, the assessment completion date must fall inside the 90-day window before application submission, and the BACB application should not be started until the required documents are ready. The live application timeline calculator can check those dates, but the BACB portal and current packet still control the final submission.
Interview tasks should be practiced as short explanations with examples and nonexamples. The Initial Competency Assessment Packet defines interview as a live discussion in which the applicant accurately describes the concept and provides examples and nonexamples where applicable.
- Explain one way to protect client dignity during routine service delivery, then give one nonexample that would undermine dignity.
- Describe a professional-boundary risk in a workplace setting, then state how an RBT would route the concern.
- Summarize the BACB supervision standard for ongoing RBT work, including 5% of monthly service hours.
- Give one situation where an RBT should seek clinical direction instead of independently changing a written plan.
The hands-on assessment and the later multiple-choice exam overlap in content, so an rbt practice exam is useful after the assessment rules are clear. Practice questions should test the TCO and BACB documents, not private assessment prompts or recalled exam items.
Practice questions#
These original questions use task scenarios tied to competency assessment preparation and early service readiness. The allocation table after the items describes this page's small practice set; it is not an official exam blueprint.
1. A technician applicant watched a token-board role-play during assessment prep. The clinic asks her to run that procedure with a learner that afternoon, but she has not performed those steps for the assessor. What should happen first?
A Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.06 says behavior-technician services occur only after supervisor confirmation of demonstrated competence.
B Reading may support preparation, but reading alone does not show that the applicant can perform the service safely and accurately.
C A peer nearby does not replace supervisor-confirmed skill performance before the service is provided.
D Asking later comes after the service attempt, while the Code 2.0 rule requires confirmation before services.
2. After the assessment form is signed and the exam is passed, Mateo is assigned a case schedule. The agency has not assigned the BACB-required person responsible for his work. Which setup fits before sessions begin?
A Family agreement does not create the required BACB supervision structure for behavior-technician services.
B Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.03 requires services within a clearly defined role under close, ongoing supervision.
C Private notes may support organization, but they do not assign the person responsible for the RBT's work.
D Peer coaching can support learning, but peer coverage is not the same as qualified ongoing supervision.
3. During a role-play, the assessor asks which session-note sentence is objective for a transition that lasted two minutes. Which sentence best fits?
A The words "upset" and "stubborn" add interpretations instead of describing observable events.
B The sentence claims an internal state and cause that the note cannot directly measure.
C Correct. TCO E.4 requires objective communication about what occurred, and Code 2.0 standard 2.02 requires accurate documentation.
D The sentence adds a cause and staff judgment rather than reporting what was observed.
4. During assessment prep, the teaching sheet says to score an independent response only after no prompt, but the graph key says to score any correct response. What should the applicant do before scoring trials?
A Choosing a rule independently does not resolve conflicting clinical instructions.
B Caregiver input does not replace the clinical direction needed for conflicting service materials.
C Completing trials first leaves the data irregularity unresolved during performance.
D Correct. TCO E.2 covers timely clinical direction for training needs and data irregularities, and Code 2.0 standard 2.06 directs service questions to the supervisor.
The practice allocation table shows the page's item tags and separates them from the official scored-exam domain weights in the RBT Test Content Outline.
| Domain represented in this page | Page items | Official scored-exam count |
|---|---|---|
| E. Documentation and Reporting | 2 | 10 scored questions (13%) |
| F. Ethics | 2 | 11 scored questions (15%) |

FAQ
Where do you take the RBT competency assessment?
The Initial Competency Assessment Packet says the assessment may be conducted in person, live via the internet, or through recorded videos created for the assessment. The responsible assessor and organization relationship rules still apply, so format alone does not make an assessor acceptable.
Is the RBT competency assessment online?
The initial assessment may use live internet sessions or recorded-video observations when the packet allows that method for the task. The RBT exam is different; per the RBT Handbook, the exam is delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE testing sites and US military bases.
Is there an RBT competency assessment passing score?
The Initial Competency Assessment Packet does not publish a percentage score. The assessor evaluates each required task for competent performance, and the responsible assessor signs the final attestation after all task items have been completed.
Can the same person provide training and assess competency?
The Initial Competency Assessment Packet says the assessor may be the same person who delivered the RBT 40-hour training. Other relationship rules still apply, including the rule that the assessor may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant during the assessment.
What changed for the 2026 initial packet?
The BACB transition guidance says the updated Initial Competency Assessment includes changes to content and assessment options and requires assistant assessors to hold RBT certification or higher. The current packet uses 19 task items, so older 20-item checklists should not be used for 2026 applications.
