The RBT study guide is a task-map for the BACB RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which the RBT Handbook identifies as the basis for the current examination. Use this page to diagnose weak domains, then move into the matching domain guide and original practice.

Start Here#

Use this sequence when a broad RBT study guide search brought you here and you need a first route through the third-edition outline.

  1. Start with the rbt task list if you need the official scope in one place before choosing a study path.
  2. Move to the rbt data collection and graphing study guide when misses involve measurement rules, graph reading, or objective descriptions.
  3. Use the rbt behavior acquisition study guide when scenarios ask about reinforcement, teaching trials, prompts, shaping, generalization, or maintenance.
  4. Compare the remaining weak domains with the diagnosis table below, then drill the domain guide before taking mixed practice.

After a domain review, try the free mixed set so errors show up across topics instead of inside one predictable chapter. Try the free practice test when you want ungated practice before deciding whether to sign in to save attempts and corrections.

Official Domain Weights#

The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) gives these official scored-exam counts; the table is not a practice-test allocation.

DomainOfficial scored-exam countOfficial scored-exam percent
Data Collection and Graphing13 scored questions17%
Behavior Assessment8 scored questions11%
Behavior Acquisition19 scored questions25%
Behavior Reduction14 scored questions19%

Diagnosis Map#

The diagnosis map routes a miss to the page that teaches the underlying task group.

Weak signal in practicePageTask codes
Measurement procedure, graph update, objective wording, calculation, or graph trendData Collection and GraphingA.1-A.8
Preference assessment, skill assessment role, or functional-assessment participationBehavior AssessmentB.1-B.3
Reinforcement, DTT, naturalistic teaching, chaining, discrimination, prompts, generalization, maintenance, shaping, or tokensBehavior AcquisitionC.1-C.11

Team concern, clinical direction, variable that may affect progress, or objective session noteDocumentation and ReportingE.1-E.4
Ethics principle, competence, supervision, confidentiality, public statement, multiple relationship, gift, professionalism, or cultural humilityEthics and Professional ConductF.1-F.10

Use the rbt documentation and reporting study guide when a question turns on what to say, record, or route through supervision rather than which treatment procedure is named. Use the rbt ethics and professional conduct study guide when the answer depends on Code 2.0, confidentiality, public statements, competence, or professional boundaries.

Study Path#

The study path below keeps this parent page distinct from the detailed calendar page. Each pass should produce an error log, not just a reread chapter.

StepActionOutput
DiagnoseAnswer a mixed set without notes and sort misses by domain.Ranked weak-domain list
Learn by taskRead the domain guide row that matches the miss. One rule and one example per missed task
Drill by domainAnswer original items from that domain before returning to mixed practice.Missed-item reasons, not just a score
MockTake a longer mixed set after the largest weak domains are repaired.Domain-level review plan

The full how to study for the RBT exam guide owns the calendar work. Return there when you need a two-, four-, or eight-week schedule rather than this page's diagnosis route.

This Page's Practice Allocation#

The practice set below samples three broad study decisions and does not mirror the official domain weights.

ItemTagWhat it checks
1A.7Whether a graph-related miss points to visual pattern review
2C.9Whether a teaching example is new learning or later durability
3F.6Whether a public claim stays truthful and non-misleading

Practice Items#

These original items are written for this guide and do not use BACB exam content, course quizzes, or competitor material.

1. Nina's log shows missed items when session points rise, drop, or stay flat across several days. Which review target best matches that pattern?

A A mean summarizes values, but Nina's misses involve describing visible movement across sessions.
B Correct. Task A.7 requires identifying trends in graphed data, so the study target is the visual pattern.
C A paired-choice check belongs to preference assessment, not graph-pattern review.
D Changing a goal is a clinical decision, not the RBT-level study target in this scenario.

2. A learner used a greeting independently during training last month. Today, the RBT observes whether the greeting still occurs during arrival without extra teaching. What should the RBT review?

A Stronger prompts would add teaching support, but the scenario asks about performance after prior teaching.
B Error checks may be part of a teaching plan, but the question focuses on whether the response continues later.
C Shorter sessions do not identify whether the learned greeting remains in the routine.
D Correct. Task C.9 requires distinguishing new-skill teaching from later checks of durable performance.

3. Taylor reviews a clinic website bio that calls Taylor a BCBA and an RBT, but Taylor currently holds only RBT certification. Which revision best fits the ethics code?

A Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standards 1.01 and 1.05 require honest, non-misleading statements about qualifications.
B Keeping a credential Taylor does not hold would make the bio false or misleading.
C Planned credentials do not replace an accurate statement of current certification.
D Claiming treatment-design work would add a separate qualification and service claim.

Freshness And Scope#

Facts on this page were checked against the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed., updated 09/2024) and the RBT Handbook (updated 06/2026). The BACB task-list page also points RBT candidates to the third-edition outline beginning January 1, 2026.

This page teaches exam preparation, not clinical decision-making. Real client procedures, documentation, and service changes follow the supervising BCBA's written plan, workplace requirements, and the applicable ethics code.

FAQ

What is the best RBT study guide to start with?

Start with the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) for official scope, then use this hub to choose the domain guide that matches your weak area.

Which RBT domain should I study first?

Study the domain with the most misses in mixed practice first. When scores are equally weak, begin with Behavior Acquisition because the TCO gives Domain C the largest scored share.

Is this page a full RBT study calendar?

No. This page is a diagnosis and navigation parent. The calendar-style study plan lives on the how-to-study page, and the domain guides handle detailed task instruction.

Does the RBT exam use the third-edition outline now?

Yes. The BACB task-list page lists the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) for examination content beginning January 1, 2026, and the RBT Handbook says the exam is based on that outline.
