RBT certification requires BACB eligibility, 40 hours of training over 5-180 days, the current Initial Competency Assessment within the BACB window, an application, and an in-person Pearson VUE exam after approval. The order matters because several documents expire before or during the application.
RBT requirements before applying#
The RBT Handbook, Eligibility Requirements section, says an applicant must be at least eighteen, have a high school-level education or equivalent, pass a criminal background check, pass an abuse registry check, complete the RBT training, and complete the current Initial Competency Assessment. The BACB also limits where new applicants may apply, so applicants should check the handbook jurisdiction section before paying any fee.
The background and abuse registry checks are not replaced by the training course. Per the RBT Handbook, the attesting certificant confirms age, education, and the two checks on the RBT Certification Application Attestation form, and that form must be signed within the handbook's application window.
Most applicants should start from the broader rbt certification hub before choosing a course, because the hub separates eligibility, training, assessment, exam, and maintenance pages by the decision each step controls.
Steps to become an RBT#
The BACB Handbook gives the process as portal account, eligibility items, certification application, application determination, exam, and supervisor listing before services. Use this order unless the BACB updates the handbook.
- Create your own BACB portal account. The RBT Handbook tells applicants to use their legal name as shown on government identification, use a personal email address, keep one account, and manage the account themselves.
- Confirm jurisdiction and basic eligibility. The RBT Handbook jurisdiction and eligibility sections control who can start a new RBT certification application and what must be true before applying.
- Complete the required training. The RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements require 40 hours and a certificate with the BACB-required independent-program statement.
- Complete the Initial Competency Assessment. The RBT Initial Competency Assessment Packet requires the assessment after training and no more than 90 days before submitting the application.
- Prepare application documents. The RBT Handbook lists the attestation form, training certificate, and completed Initial Competency Assessment as uploads for the application.
- Submit the application and pay the BACB fee. The RBT Handbook Fees table lists a $65 certification application processing fee paid to the BACB.
- Wait for the application determination. The RBT Handbook says to allow two weeks for staff processing and to resolve Action Items through the portal if the application is not approved.
- Schedule and take the exam. The RBT Handbook says approved candidates schedule through Pearson VUE, and the BACB Examination Information page says BACB examinations are delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE testing sites and US military bases.
- Make the certification active before services. The RBT Handbook, Public Identification section, says an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator must list the RBT as a supervisee in the BACB portal before the RBT may practice, bill, or represent themself as an RBT.
The training step has enough detail to deserve its own checklist, so use the rbt 40 hour training page before enrolling or uploading a certificate.
Timeline and document windows#
The timeline below shows the main windows as of October 1, 2026. It is not a promise of processing speed; it is a way to avoid submitting documents in an order the BACB materials do not support.
| Timing point | What the BACB source says | Practical sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Training duration | The RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements require 40 hours over 5-180 days. | Start training only when you can finish within the allowed course window. |
| Assessment timing | The RBT Initial Competency Assessment Packet says the assessment must be after training and no more than 90 days before submitting the application. | Schedule the assessor after the course is complete, not before. |
| Application life | The RBT Handbook says applications are active for 90 days. | Apply after the attestation, certificate, and assessment are ready to upload. |
| BACB review | The RBT Handbook application section says to allow two weeks for processing. | Watch the portal and email for approval or Action Items. |
| Exam appointment | The RBT Handbook says candidates schedule through Pearson VUE after approval. | Pay Pearson VUE at scheduling and follow the test-center rules. |
The planned rbt application timeline tool uses the same windows to flag when a training end date, assessment date, or application date may collide with a BACB deadline.
Who should not start yet#
Some applicants should pause before paying for training or submitting the application. The RBT Handbook says applicants outside BACB jurisdiction may not begin a new certification application, and the jurisdiction list includes country-specific restrictions and testing-site limits.
Applicants who do not yet have a qualified attesting certificant or assessment organization should also wait. Per the Initial Competency Assessment Packet, the responsible assessor, any assistant assessor(s) and the applicant must all be employed at, or have a contractual relationship with, the same organization. A course alone does not create that relationship.
Applicants with a prior criminal, disciplinary, or public-safety history should read the RBT Handbook application disclosure language before paying. The handbook describes a Prior History Review process for people who have not yet paid for a BACB examination application and are concerned about eligibility.
Fees and exam logistics#
The fee table lists the BACB and Pearson VUE payments candidates encounter during the initial process. Taxes or local charges can change the final amount Pearson VUE collects.
| Fee | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Certification application processing | $65 | RBT Handbook, Fees table |
| Exam appointment | $45 | RBT Handbook, Fees and Scheduling sections |
| Two-year recertification application | $50 | RBT Handbook, Recertification Fees table |
| Late recertification fee | $50 | RBT Handbook, Recertification Fees table |
The RBT Handbook says the exam is computer based, English only, and taken through Pearson VUE after application approval. For study after approval, the rbt practice exam page is the safer bridge than memorizing recalled questions, because BACB exam content is confidential and the handbook prohibits disclosure or reconstruction.
After certification#
Passing the exam is not the final operational step. The RBT Handbook, Public Identification section, says the RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator must list the RBT as a supervisee in the BACB portal for active practice, billing, or public representation as an RBT.
Maintenance rules continue after certification. The RBT Handbook and 2026 transition guidance say RBTs must receive ongoing supervision, follow ethics and self-reporting rules, and move into recertification rules based on the 2026 transition. For RBTs who become certified in 2026 or recertify in 2026, the handbook describes a 2-year cycle with 12 PDUs beginning with the next recertification cycle, and the transition guidance explains the 2026 final annual recertification path for current RBTs.
When the application is approved and exam practice becomes the main task, the rbt mock exam page gives a full-length practice format without implying a BACB passing percentage or using real exam questions.
Practice questions#
These original questions test process and ethics rules that appear around certification, supervision, and professional representation. They are not copied from BACB exam content.
1. Mina passed the RBT exam yesterday. Her clinic has not finished the required RBT oversight setup, but a scheduler puts her on tomorrow's service schedule. What is the best interpretation?
A Passing the exam does not replace the RBT Handbook rule for supervised active practice.
B Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.03 requires close, ongoing supervision, and the RBT Handbook requires the portal listing before RBT services.
C Skipping supervision conflicts with Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.03 and the handbook's public-identification rule.
D Calling the session training time does not create authorization to provide RBT services.
2. Jordan completed the training and has not yet completed the Initial Competency Assessment. A manager asks Jordan to tell families, "I am already an RBT; the paperwork is just pending." Which response fits the credential rules?
A Training is one eligibility component; it does not create the RBT credential.
B Clinic conversations can still misrepresent professional credentials and certification status.
C Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.05 prohibits false or misleading statements about qualifications or behavior-technician services.
D A BCBA's presence does not change whether Jordan holds or may represent the credential.
3. Priya finished the required training. During orientation for a new program, her supervisor has not yet confirmed that she can perform the required technician tasks. What should happen before she provides RBT services?
A Repeating training is not the next rule when the training was completed under current requirements.
B Pearson VUE scheduling happens after BACB approval and does not demonstrate technician performance.
C A training certificate documents eligibility training, not supervisor-confirmed performance.
D Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standard 1.06 says behavior-technician services begin only after the supervisor confirms demonstrated competence.
4. Ravi passed the exam and is waiting for his new clinic's BACB portal record. A scheduler assigns him to start an RBT session tomorrow even though his certification is not active for that clinic yet. What should Ravi do first?
A Correct. RBT Ethics Code 2.0 standards 2.02 and 2.06 require following supervisor direction and taking service questions or concerns to the supervisor.
B Starting first conflicts with the RBT Handbook rule that inactive RBTs may not practice, bill, or represent themselves as active.
C A future update does not resolve current inactive status before services begin.
D A prior note does not establish current active status or current direction for this clinic.
FAQ
Where do you get RBT certification?
RBT certification is obtained through the BACB application process, not through a training company. The RBT Handbook says applicants use the BACB portal, upload required documents, receive an application determination, and then schedule the exam through Pearson VUE after approval.
Does the BACB approve RBT training providers?
No. The RBT Handbook says the BACB does not provide training, completion certificates, or training program recommendations, and the 2026 training certificate must state that the training is offered independent of the BACB.
Can the RBT exam be taken remotely?
No. The BACB Examination Information page says BACB examinations are delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE testing sites and US military bases. Pearson VUE uses computer-based testing, but the delivery site is still a test center or authorized military base.
Should I apply before my assessment is complete?
No. The RBT Handbook says applications are active for 90 days and recommends waiting until all eligibility requirements are met. The Initial Competency Assessment Packet also says the assessment must be completed after training and no more than 90 days before submitting the application.
What changed for applicants in 2026?
The BACB transition guidance says applicants who apply on or after January 1, 2026 must meet the 2026 training requirements and complete the updated RBT Initial Competency Assessment after that training. Current RBTs follow the transition path described in the same guidance for 2026 recertification and later two-year cycles.
