Functional communication training is an ABA procedure that teaches a communication response to access the same function as a target behavior while the old response no longer contacts that outcome. For RBT exam study, it belongs under D.3 of the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.): implementing differential reinforcement procedures.
How FCT Fits Task D.3#
The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) lists D.3 as: "Implement differential reinforcement procedures (e.g., DRO, DRA, DRI, DRL, FCT)." That wording matters because FCT is not a separate exam domain; it is one example inside Behavior Reduction.
Use the parent differential reinforcement page when a scenario compares FCT with DRA, DRO, DRI, or DRL. Use this page when the question is narrower: how a communication replacement response contacts the same outcome that previously maintained the target behavior.
The aba terms hub is the parent glossary for concepts like FCT, extinction, reinforcement schedules, and functional assessment.
What FCT Requires#
This table shows the study sequence behind FCT without turning the page into client-specific treatment instructions.
| Step | What it means for study | RBT-level boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Identify the function | The communication response must access the relevant outcome. | The RBT follows the function and procedure named by the supervising professional. |
| Choose a replacement response | The response may be vocal, signed, picture-based, device-based, or another taught form. | The RBT does not independently select a new response during session. |
| Teach and prompt the response | The learner contacts reinforcement for the communication response. | The RBT uses the assigned prompts, fading steps, and consequences. |
| Withhold the old payoff | The target behavior no longer produces the same programmed outcome. | The RBT follows the written extinction or withholding step exactly as trained. |
| Thin reinforcement when directed | Later steps may add delay, schedule thinning, or other changes. | The RBT waits for direction before changing timing or criteria. |
The 2026 40-hour training curriculum names differential reinforcement as Behavior-Change Interventions content, and the RBT Handbook states that the examination is based on the 3rd edition TCO.
FCT Examples And Non-Examples#
The table below separates true FCT study examples from similar procedures that belong under nearby terms.
| Scenario | Example or non-example | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A learner used to hit the table to get help. The written steps teach tapping a help card, and help follows the card use. | Example | The replacement response communicates the same assistance outcome. |
| A learner used to leave the table to escape work. The written steps teach handing over a break card, and a brief break follows the card. | Example | The communication response accesses escape in the trained way. |
| A learner receives attention every two minutes no matter what behavior occurs. | Non-example | That is noncontingent reinforcement, not reinforcement for a communication response. |
| A learner earns a token for every interval without throwing items. | Non-example | That is closer to DRO because reinforcement follows absence of the target behavior. |
| A learner receives praise for sitting with hands folded because that posture cannot occur with grabbing. | Non-example | That is closer to DRI because the reinforced response is incompatible, not necessarily communicative. |
For the absence-based version of differential reinforcement, review differential reinforcement of other behavior after this page. The planned differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior and DRL and DRH pages cover sibling procedures in the same D.3 family.
Function-To-Response Map#
The original scenario map below is the information-gain element for this page. It shows what the communication response must match in study questions.
| Function shown in the scenario | Old response example | Taught communication example | Why it fits FCT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attention | Calling out during group work | Raising a card that says "talk" | The communication response gets attention instead of the old response. |
| Escape | Pushing away worksheets | Handing over a break card | The communication response gets the same brief break outcome. |
| Access | Grabbing a tablet | Pointing to a tablet icon | The communication response requests the same item. |
| Help | Crying when a task is hard | Saying "help" or tapping help | The communication response gets assistance. |
FCT scenarios often depend on functional assessment information, but that is a separate study topic. If a stem asks how the team identified the maintaining variable, use functional analysis aba instead.
Common Study Mistakes#
Do not call every replacement behavior FCT. A replacement response is FCT only when it communicates for the same relevant outcome. Sitting quietly, keeping hands down, or completing work can be reinforced alternatives, but they are not communication responses by themselves.
Do not confuse FCT with simply giving the learner what they want. The study point is that the communication response contacts reinforcement while the target response no longer contacts that programmed outcome.
Do not turn a concept question into clinical advice. In real service delivery, the RBT follows the written behavior-change plan, records data as assigned, and routes concerns to the supervisor.
Practice Allocation#
This table distinguishes official scored-exam domain weights from this page's original practice allocation.
| Measure | Count or tag | Source or purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Official Domain D scored questions | 14 | RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) |
| Official Domain D share | 19% | RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) |
| Total scored exam items | 75 scored questions | RBT Handbook, Examination section |
| This page's practice items | 5 | Original scenarios for this article |
| Actual task tags below | 5 D.3 items | Page-level practice, not an official task allocation |
The mixed rbt practice test behavior reduction is the next drill once these examples are clear because it mixes D.1 through D.7 scenarios instead of isolating FCT.
Practice Questions#
These original questions practise D.3 implementation scenarios without using recalled exam content.
1. During table work, Nolan bangs the table when he needs help. The written steps teach him to tap a help card, and assistance follows card use. Which procedure is shown?
A Correct. The taught response communicates for the same help outcome that maintained the earlier response.
B DRO would reinforce absence of the target behavior for a set interval, not card use.
C DRI would reinforce a response that cannot occur with the target behavior.
D DRL would reinforce a lower rate of a behavior that may still occur.
2. Kai cries when a snack container is closed. The teaching steps say to guide him to touch a snack icon, then provide a small snack portion. Which RBT action best matches those steps?
A Withholding every request would not reinforce the taught communication response.
B Correct. The response is prompted, and the relevant item follows that response.
C Removing the snack after crying describes a consequence for crying, not teaching the request response.
D Scoring intervals is a measurement action, not the communication teaching step.
3. Which scenario is a non-example of the procedure on this page?
A Signing for a break can be an example when the sign accesses the same break outcome.
B Tapping for help can be an example when help follows the taught response.
C Correct. Time-based tokens do not require a communication response for the relevant outcome.
D Saying more can be an example when the spoken request accesses the same item or activity.
4. Rina reliably hands over a break card. The updated steps say some card uses contact a brief delay before the break. What changed?
A Function masking is not the relevant term for adding a delay after successful requesting.
B Response blocking interrupts a response; the stem describes delaying reinforcement after card use.
C Interval scoring is a measurement procedure, not a change in reinforcement timing.
D Correct. Schedule thinning can make reinforcement less immediate or less dense after initial teaching.
5. A learner screams when puzzle pieces stick together. The written steps teach saying "help"; assistance follows "help," and screaming no longer produces assistance. What outcome is being matched?
A Correct. The taught response accesses the same assistance outcome as the earlier response.
B A measurement system records behavior; it does not describe the matched functional outcome.
C Response cost removes a reinforcer after behavior, which is not the key relation in this stem.
D A crisis-response chain is not shown by teaching a help response for stuck materials.
FAQ
What is FCT in ABA?
FCT means functional communication training. It teaches a communication response that accesses the same function as a target behavior, while the prior response no longer contacts the same programmed outcome.
How does FCT address problem behavior?
For exam-study purposes, FCT addresses problem behavior by reinforcing a communication response that serves the same function. The old response does not receive the same outcome under the written procedure.
Is FCT the same as DRA?
FCT is commonly treated as a communication-focused form of DRA because the reinforced alternative response communicates for the relevant outcome. DRA is broader and can reinforce alternatives that are not communication responses.
Can an RBT choose the communication response?
For RBT exam study, the RBT implements the response and reinforcement steps as written and trained. Choosing the response for a real client belongs to the supervising professional and the behavior-change plan.
Is FCT only for vocal speech?
No. A study scenario can use vocal words, signs, picture exchange, icons, devices, gestures, or other taught communication forms when those forms access the relevant outcome.
