Functional analysis ABA is an assessment process that uses planned conditions to test a hypothesis about why a target behavior occurs. Rather than only describing naturally occurring events, it compares behavior across arranged conditions in which selected environmental events differ.
Functional Analysis Definition and Purpose#
The purpose of functional analysis is to evaluate whether a particular consequence or environmental event is related to a target behavior. A hypothesis may involve attention, escape from a demand, access to an item or activity, or automatic reinforcement.
Functional analysis is not simply an observation with a function label attached. It includes planned conditions that differ in meaningful ways. The team measures the target behavior in those conditions and compares the resulting data.
For example, a written assessment plan may arrange a demand in one condition and a leisure context in another. If the plan states what happens after the target behavior, the RBT follows that response rule and collects the specified data. The supervisor reviews the comparison when evaluating the hypothesis.
The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) states that B.3 is participating in components of functional assessment procedures, with descriptive assessment and functional analysis as examples. The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) states that D.1 is identifying common functions of behavior.
For focused study of the RBT role, visit the functional behavior assessment study guide because it addresses participation in functional assessment procedures. Use the ABA terms page when you want to place functional analysis among related ABA vocabulary.
Functional Analysis Examples and Non-Examples#
A planned comparison is the feature that separates functional analysis from observation or intervention. The examples below are fictional study examples, not universal assessment protocols.
| Scenario | Functional analysis example? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A written plan alternates a demand condition and a leisure comparison condition while recording the same target response. | Yes | The procedure arranges conditions and measures behavior for comparison. |
| An RBT records what happened before and after yelling during naturally occurring classroom routines. | No | This is descriptive ABC observation, not an arranged condition comparison. |
| A team teaches a learner to request a break instead of throwing materials. | No | This is an intervention that teaches a replacement response. |
| A fictional written assessment compares a test condition in which the target response produces toy access with a control condition in which toy access is freely available, and compares the target-response data. | Yes | The planned test-control comparison evaluates a tangible-access hypothesis. |
For these study examples, distinguish attention, escape, tangible access, and automatic reinforcement as possible functions rather than conclusions from a single event.
ABC Recording, FBA, and FCT Compared#
Several related terms are used together, but they describe different activities. Reading the purpose of the procedure helps determine which concept applies.
| Concept | Main purpose | What happens | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Functional analysis | Test a function hypothesis | Planned conditions are arranged and compared. | When a written assessment plan calls for experimental comparison. |
| ABC recording | Describe observed events | Antecedent, behavior, and consequence are recorded as they occur. | When documenting naturally occurring behavior events. |
| Functional behavior assessment | Gather information about behavior and possible function | Information may come from interviews, observations, descriptive assessment, or functional analysis. | When a team is assessing behavior and possible variables related to it. |
| Functional communication training | Teach a functionally equivalent communication response | The communication response produces the reinforcer identified as maintaining the target behavior. | When the written intervention teaches communication that serves the same function as the target behavior. |
Visit ABC data recording when you want to identify antecedents, behaviors, and consequences in naturally occurring situations. Visit functional communication training when you want to compare assessment with a replacement-skill intervention.
A trial-based functional analysis uses brief planned test and comparison segments within ordinary routines. The written protocol defines the segment arrangement, target behavior, measurement system, and response procedures.
A latency-based functional analysis uses the time from the start of a condition to the first target response as the measurement outcome. The assessment still evaluates a function hypothesis, while the measurement method changes.
RBT Participation in Functional Analysis#
The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) describes B.3 as participating in components of functional assessment procedures. In a functional analysis scenario, participation may include preparing materials, following condition instructions, measuring the target behavior, and documenting data as the written plan directs.
The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) names functional analysis as an example under B.3. A study scenario may therefore ask whether a record, condition setup, or response procedure matches the stated protocol.
Per the RBT Ethics Code 2.0, standards 1.03 and 2.02, RBTs work within a defined role under close, ongoing supervision and follow their supervisors’ direction. For these study examples, real implementation follows the supervising BCBA’s written assessment plan; RBTs do not independently redesign conditions or decide the final function.

Common Misconceptions About Functional Analysis#
One ABC sequence proves a behavior function#
One ABC sequence records one observation. It may suggest a question for further assessment, but it does not create a planned comparison by itself.
Every demand-related behavior has an escape function#
A demand appearing before behavior does not alone identify function. The relevant question is what occurs in the condition and what relationship the assessment data show.
A comparison condition means nothing is measured#
A comparison condition can still require careful measurement. The written plan determines which target behavior and data system the RBT uses.
Functional analysis and FCT are the same procedure#
Functional analysis evaluates a hypothesis through arranged comparison. Functional communication training teaches a communication response that produces the reinforcer identified as maintaining the target behavior.
Practice Questions#
1. A written assessment protocol uses 5-minute segments and requires duration of crying in seconds. Which record entry does not match the measurement instruction?
A This entry reports crying as a duration in seconds.
B This entry reports crying as a duration in seconds.
C Correct. Instances are a count, while the protocol requires duration in seconds.
D This entry reports crying as a duration in seconds.
2. During a written assessment condition, Priya begins a worksheet, hits the desk, and the worksheet is removed. Which common function does that outcome suggest?
A No item or activity is delivered after the desk hit.
B Correct. The worksheet is removed following the target behavior.
C The stem does not state that staff attention follows the behavior.
D The stem describes a social environmental change after the behavior.
3. A control segment requires the RBT to arrange leisure materials and adult interaction before data collection. Which record shows a deviation from that written arrangement?
A Correct. The record states that the leisure materials remained stored.
B The record includes leisure materials and adult interaction.
C The record includes both stated parts of the control arrangement.
D This record does not document the setup, so it does not show a deviation.
4. Mateo hums during periods with no stated demands, adult reaction, item delivery, or social interaction. Which hypothesized function best fits the description?
A The stem does not describe a demand being removed after humming.
B The stem does not describe adult attention after humming.
C The stem does not describe access to an item or activity after humming.
D Correct. The behavior is described without stated social consequences or item access.
FAQ
What is a trial-based functional analysis?
A trial-based functional analysis uses short planned test and comparison segments embedded in everyday routines. The written plan identifies the segment arrangements, measurement, and response procedures.
Is ABC recording a functional analysis?
No. ABC recording describes antecedents, behavior, and consequences as they occur. Functional analysis includes planned condition arrangements for comparison.
How do you do a functional analysis?
A supervisor develops written assessment procedures that identify the target behavior, conditions, measurement, and response rules. The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) identifies the RBT role as participating in components of functional assessment procedures. RBTs follow supervisory direction within their defined role under close, ongoing supervision (RBT Ethics Code 2.0).
When is an FBA required by law?
Legal and policy requirements can vary by jurisdiction, educational setting, funding source, and organization. Consult applicable local requirements and the supervising professional when this question affects a real client decision.
Which functional analysis condition best describes escape?
An escape condition evaluates a hypothesis that target behavior is related to reducing, postponing, or removing a demand. The specific arrangement and response rule come from the written assessment protocol.
What is functional analysis in math or engineering?
The phrase has different meanings outside ABA. In ABA, functional analysis refers to an assessment that examines environmental variables related to behavior.
